Stan Hathaway Honored with Statue in Front of the Hathaway Building
CHEYENNE, Wyo. – A statue of Governor Stanley K. Hathaway was unveiled in Cheyenne during a ceremony on November 18 at the Hathaway Building, 2300 Capitol Avenue. Governor Matt Mead accepted the gift of the statue on behalf of the State of Wyoming.
“Governor Hathaway was a great leader for our state, a generous friend, father and husband. He cast such a large shadow in Wyoming,” Governor Mead said. “I was honored to know him and I hope this statue will allow further generations to learn about Governor Hathaway and his lasting contributions.”
Governor Hathaway served from 1967 to 1975. He is most remembered for enacting Wyoming’s first mineral severance tax in 1969 and for playing an instrumental role in creating the Permanent Mineral Trust Fund in 1973. His terms in office were also marked by reorganization of state government, the passage of environmental laws including the enactment of air and water quality standards and surface mining regulations, and the creation of the Department of Environmental Quality. After serving two terms as Governor, Hathaway went on to become Secretary of the Interior for President Gerald R. Ford.
Governor Hathaway earned statewide respect for his service to Wyoming. This is reflected in the gift of this statue, generously supported by the many donors. Among the original proposal proponents were James E. Barrett, Clarence A. “Bud” Brimmer, Clifford Hansen, Earl and Carol Holding, Jack Rosenthal, Thomas Stroock and John Wold.
The bronze statue was created by Wheatland artist Carl E. Jensen.
This project was approved by the Capitol Complex Advisory Committee (CCAC) which exists to evaluate and make recommendations to the State Building Commission (SBC) regarding the location, purchase, donation, placement and maintenance of works of art, exhibits or displays, and memorials located within the Wyoming Capitol Building and Capitol Complex.
