AMERICAN INDIAN HERITAGE MONTH
WHEREAS, American Indians have been an integral part of this land since before recorded history as recounted through their oral history to present day; and
WHEREAS, they have been instrumental in the building of this nation’s character and have endured attempts to eradicate their way of life and cultural identity; and
WHEREAS, November is annually proclaimed by U.S. President and Congress as American Indian Alaska Native Heritage Month, it is an opportune time to raise awareness about the contribution of indigenous people to the State of Wyoming; and
WHEREAS, these tribal nations remain a vital component of Wyoming’s cultural, political, social, economic, and moral fiber, and their holistic views of people and the world have set the foundation, standards, and principles that humans can exist without destroying the natural environment by respecting all those things that inhabit it. Those same ideals and values make Wyoming what it is today – appreciation of her scenic wonders, abundance and respect of wildlife, and planning for future generations; and
WHEREAS, the Southeast Wyoming Inter-Tribal Pow Wow Association and the Cheyenne Depot Museum will host the 2nd Annual American Indian Heritage Day event on November 14, 2009 at the Cheyenne Depot. This event will precipitate an awareness of the Northern Plains peoples’ rich culture, traditions and livelihood and contributions to the state’s folkloric heritage and history with special emphasis on the resident tribes of Wyoming;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, DAVE FREUDENTHAL, Governor of the State of Wyoming, do hereby proclaim November 2009 as
“AMERICAN INDIAN HERITAGE MONTH”
in Wyoming
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Executive Seal of the Governor of Wyoming to be affixed this 7th day of November, 2009.
