LIVESTRONG DAY

    WHEREAS, according to the Wyoming Department of Health, cancer is the 2nd leading cause of death in Wyoming; and

    WHEREAS, three out of four people in their lifetime will have a family member diagnosed with cancer, one in three women and one in two men will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime, and 1.4 million people will be diagnosed this year; and

    WHEREAS, today 65% of adults diagnosed with cancer will be alive five years after diagnosis, up from 50% in the 1970’s, and there are more than 10.5 million cancer survivors living in the United States with 23,473 cancer survivors in Wyoming today; and

    WHEREAS, more than 565,000 Americans are expected to die from cancer this year, African-American men and women have the highest mortality rates for all cancer sites combined, and cancer is the number one killer of those under age 85; and

    WHEREAS, the cost of cancer last year was $206 billion; and

    WHEREAS, the state of Wyoming has concern and compassion for people affected by cancer; and

    WHEREAS, by uniting people affected by cancer to raise awareness through education, prevention, screening and early detection efforts, we gain strength in the fight against cancer in Wyoming; and

    WHEREAS, we are committed to ensure all cancer patients are treated with compassion and respect, and are provided with the tools and resources necessary to battle the physical, emotional and practical challenges of a cancer diagnosis; and

    WHEREAS, LIVESTRONG Day exemplifies the spirit of people affected by cancer—survivors, caregivers, friends, family, physicians, nurses, social workers and researchers throughout Wyoming;

    NOW, THEREFORE, I, DAVE FREUDENTHAL, GOVERNOR, do hereby proclaim May 13, 2008 as

“LIVESTRONG DAY”

and May 24, 2008, as “Wyoming Weekend of Hope Day” in Wyoming.
