NATIONAL GEOGRAPHY AWARENESS WEEK

WHEREAS, the week of November 15-21, 2009, has been elected Geography Awareness Week as part of the National Geographic Society’s annual educational outreach program Geography Action! for students grades K through 12; and

WHEREAS, Geography Awareness Week promotes geographic literacy and education in Wyoming’s schools and communities, which is an essential part of a 21st century education, and has been a congressionally-mandated week since 1987; and

WHEREAS, this year’s Geography Action! theme of Mapping the Americas is the third stop on a five year journey following the migration of humans around the world, will help bring a better understanding of geography to classrooms and communities throughout Wyoming; and

WHEREAS, teachers, students, and communities across Wyoming will gain knowledge about the world’s cultures, environments, and contemporary issues, using curriculum developed by the National Geographic Society and activities provided during Geography Awareness Week and throughout the school year.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, DAVE FREUDENTHAL, Governor, do hereby proclaim November 15-21, 2009 as

NATIONAL GEOGRAPHY AWARENESS WEEK

in Wyoming.
